Campus as a Lab Spring Hack-a-Thon

Spring Hackathon

Orientation to Energy Use on Campus

In 2015, the 160 campus buildings and grounds used $50M of energy (electricity + natural gas). This energy use accounts for approximately 70% of the University’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Improving campus energy efficiency is the key driver to impacting GHG emissions and the University's environmental footprint. It is a complex problem to unravel, given the physical, economic and behavioral factors involved.

Friday, May 20, 4:30-10:30p
Saieh Hall for Economics, Room 203
1160 E 58th St
FOOD AND BEVERAGES PROVIDED

After an introduction by Eric Isaacs, University Provost, the first part of this event will orient participants the physical campus and how it uses energy. Basic concepts of energy data and data visualization will also be presented.  Mentors and experts will teach and collaborate with participants.  After an orientation, participants will select from a series of challenges and compete to identify features in campus energy data or propose new designs for tools that could be developed to improve our understanding of campus energy usage.

This event This event is co-hosted by the University of Chicago Office of the Provost, UChicagoSustinability, EPIC & RDCEP, and is open to all. To sign up, click here or use the sign-up button below.
